With just days before Election Day, State Assemblyman Mark Walczyk announced Wednesday that he has been endorsed by former North Country Congressman and Secretary of the Army, John McHugh.

Secretary McHugh has been in public service since 1971 and left an immeasurable impact on Northern New York.  He was elected in 1984 as a New York State Senator, where he served four terms.  He was then elected to Congress in 1992, serving nine terms.  In 2009, McHugh was nominated by former President Barack Obama to serve as Secretary of the Army and was later confirmed by the Senate.  In this role, Secretary McHugh oversaw the Department of the Army’s budget of $200 billion and a workforce of more than one million Army Reserve soldiers, National Guard and civilian employees.

“Assemblyman Mark Walczyk has served the North Country well in his first term and his passion for bettering the region is evident through his dedication and work ethic,” said Secretary John McHugh.  “Assemblyman Walczyk has proven to be a leader, partnering with local officials to advocate for North Country priorities, being vigilant on water levels and working across the aisle in Albany to advance legislation that will ensure St. Lawrence and Jefferson Counties have a brighter tomorrow.  I endorse Assemblyman Walczyk and there’s no doubt in my mind that he is the clear choice to represent the 116th Assembly District.”

“Secretary John McHugh is the definition of a public servant and I’m incredibly honored to receive his endorsement,” said Assemblyman Mark Walczyk.  “Secretary McHugh knows better than anyone that the North Country needs strong voices that will stick up for our values and I’m proud to keep that fight up the same way he did.  I look forward to exercising the same drive Secretary McHugh displayed in the halls of Albany and in Washington to keep the Front Yard of America thriving.”

Secretary McHugh’s endorsement of Assemblyman Mark Walczyk is the most recent in a list that continues to grow as he seeks his second term as Assemblyman.  To date, Walczyk has been endorsed by State Senator Patty Ritchie, nearly 130 local elected officials across St. Lawrence and Jefferson Counties, PBANYS, Unshackle Upstate, the NRA, the North Atlantic State Regional Council of Carpenters, Local 277, NYSUT, the state’s largest teacher’s union, the Ogdensburg Police Department Patrolman Benevolent Association, the Business Council of New York State, Inc, Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 73, CSEA, the Empire State’s Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, the NYSTPBA, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Association and the New York State Law Enforcement Officers Union, Council 82, Local 2390 and the New York State Police Investigators Association.
